Glossary · Watering

Plant watering schedule.

A plant watering schedule depends on the species, pot size, room light, season, and your local weather. Average gaps for common houseplants in 6-inch pots with medium light: snake plant every 14–21 days, ZZ plant every 14–21, pothos every 7–10, philodendron every 7–10, monstera every 7–14, peace lily every 5–7, fiddle leaf fig every 7–14, calathea every 4–7, fern every 3–5, succulent every 14–21. Smaller pots dry faster (subtract 2–4 days); larger pots dry slower (add 4–7 days). Bright direct light shortens the gap; low light extends it. Always check the top inch of soil with a finger before watering.

Watering frequency by species.

Baseline gaps for a healthy plant in a 6-inch pot with medium indoor light. Adjust for your specific conditions below.

Plant Days between Note
Snake plant 14–21 Underwatering tolerates better than overwatering — wait until fully dry.
ZZ plant 14–21 Stores water in rhizomes — extremely drought tolerant.
Cactus / succulent 14–21 summer · 28+ winter Drench then dry completely. Less in winter.
Pothos 7–10 Top 2 inches dry to the touch.
Philodendron 7–10 Same as pothos — both forgiving.
Monstera deliciosa 7–14 Likes a slight dry-out but not severe drought.
Peace lily 5–7 Droops dramatically when thirsty — recovers in hours.
Spider plant 7 Sensitive to fluoride; use rainwater or distilled if leaf tips brown.
Fiddle leaf fig 7–14 Hates inconsistency more than under or overwatering specifically.
Calathea / prayer plant 4–7 Top inch dry. Distilled water only — sensitive to tap minerals.
Boston fern 3–5 Soil should never dry fully. Mist daily.
Aloe vera 14–21 Drench then bone dry. Yellow leaves = overwatering.
Orchid (Phalaenopsis) 7 Soak roots 10 minutes; let drain fully. Bark medium dries in 7 days indoors.

Five factors that change the gap.

Pot size

4″ pot dries 4–7 days faster than 8″.

Pot material

Terracotta breathes — dries 3–5 days faster than plastic or glazed ceramic.

Room light

Bright direct sun shortens the gap by 2–4 days; low light extends by 3–5.

Season

Winter cuts most houseplants' water needs by ~30%.

Local weather

Humid + cloudy = soil stays wet; dry + windy = soil dries fast.
